4th Short-Term Exchange

Institut Joan Salvat Ppasseit - Barcelona

 

 Date: 5th – 11th  April 2016

The fourth short-term exchange meeting was hosted by the Spanish school. The topic of the meeting was “Energy”. The meeting was organised by the Spanish Erasmus+ team of Institut Joan Salvat Papasseit in Barcelona (Spain). The three teams from Belgium, Greece and Germany attended the meeting with six students each and they were accompanied by one teacher and one coordinator for each team. After taking into consideration the approved application and the agreed goals, nine activities were organised.



Sunday, 5 March 2017: “Different Cultures Meet in Barcelona” – Arrival day

pHOTOS12The host families welcomed their Belgian, Greek and German partners at the school in Barcelona. The foreign students experienced a Sunday evening with a Spanish family. The teachers were taken to the hotel and enjoyed dinner in a restaurant in the Barceloneta neighbourhood. 

Monday, 6 March 2017: “CLIL Activities - Transferring Knowledge to Younger Kids”

CLIL1On Monday morning all the participants met at Institut Joan Salvat Papasseit and were welcomed by the headmaster of the school, Mrs Anna Graell, and the Spanish coordinator, Mr Jose Maria Arenas. The students prepared the CLIL activities that they had produced in their home countries. During the preparation, the students from all four countr
ies worked cooperatively together in small internationally mixed groups. Then they went to two different primary schools, Escola Alexandre Gali and Escola Mediterranean and went to classes in grades 5 and 6, and taught kids about energy and how to reduce their use of it (Activity 1). After that, they talked about the experience during a lunch hosted by the parents association of Institut Joan Salvat Papasseit. After lunch, the Spanish school organised a leisure activity by the beach where students enjoyed playing beach volleyball and had the possibility to participate in an introductory class of paddle surfing.

Tuesday, 7 March 2017:  “From the Basics to the Energy of the Future”

On Tuesday the Erasmus+ group first visited The Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia in Terrassa (Activity 2). The group visited the permanent exhibition "The Textile Mill", which displays the production of wool fabric using the original techniques of a mill dating from the early 20th century. The tour began in the former basement of the mill, which still has the original coal storage area, boilers, chimney and steam engine, the heart of the factory. The building represents the finest work of modernist industrial architecture and the tour covers the entire industrial process of wool transformation, from the delivery of the fleece to the finished textiles exiting the factory gate.

After that, the group went to Sabadell to the Gas Natural Museum (Activity 3). Through digital support, students performed an energy audit of what could be their future home. By observing energy expenditure, they became aware of what measures needed to be taken to save energy and water. The group took the construction of the Gas Natural Museum as an example of sustainable building and discovered what ecosolutions had been applied to it.

Wednesday, 8 March 2017: “Hackathon Activity + Nature Meets Architecture”

DSC 1717The Spanish coordinator, in collaboration with mSchools, Mobile World Centre and Filmclub+Wärks, organized a hackathon day for the Erasmus+ team (Activity 4). A hackathon is a sprint-like design event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development - including graphic designers, interface designers, project managers, and other experts - collaborate intensively on software projects or ideas. This hackathon was intended simply for educational purposes and had a specific focus on creating future app’s to be more sustainable in the use of water, energy and waste management. Three real sustainable problems were introduced to the teams and each group needed to solve one of them by thinking outside of the box.  The hackathon took place at the Movistar Auditorium of the Mobile World Center, which has become the reference point for events held in Barcelona that are related to the mobile sector, innovation and technology. After lunch, the Erasmus+ team went to Sagrada Familia Basilica, designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The students participated in a nature and architectural tour around the church (Activity 5).

Thursday, 9 March 2017: “Energy in Life”

ALL WEB   WEBPAGE2On Thursday, the Erasmus+ team went to Cosmocaixa, a science museum located in Barcelona (Activity 6). The museum features a variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions that showcase the environment, nature, science, and space through touch and play displays. After the museum visit, the students participated in a workshop entitled, “How energy is formed:  Why does current energy consumption cause so much worry?” In this workshop, through participatory experiments, students learned more about the concepts of energy present in our everyday lives. They were amazed by and curious about energy, and they learned what its origin is and what transformations can be experienced. In addition, they became aware of renewable energies and of the research that is necessary to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels.

After that, and due to a high demand from our students, we visited the F.C. Barcelona Experience, a private tour and football club museum where our students experienced the feeling of entering the field from the player’s tunnel, enjoyed the area dedicated to Leo Messi and learned about the history of F.C. Barcelona (Activity 7).

Friday, 10 March 2017:  “Market Your Ideas + Discover the City Day” - Farewell party
DSC 0080On Friday, the students shared all their previously created “50 Second Videotips: How to Save Energy” videos (Activity 8). Then there was a discussion about the videos and what the students had learned from them.
After that, the teams that participated in the hackathon day, prepared a professional presentation of their ideas for a mobile app. They gathered all the relevant information to be presented, along with the most simple and effective ways to sell their ideas (product features, benefits and target market). A documentary of the hackathon process and presentations is being created by a film director from Filmclub and will be available soon on our website.

Before lunch, the social studies professor at INS Joan Salvat Papasseit organized a treasure hunt around Barcelona (Activity 9). Didactic material with fun and visual activities allowed our students to discover the cultural, artistic and historical importance of the city of Barcelona. In the evening, a farewell party was organized by the Spanish coordinators, and the winners were announced of the web contest, which was organized by the Belgian team.

Saturday, 11 March -  Sunday, 12 March 2017: “Farewell and Goodbye” – Leaving Barcelona

After everyone returned to their home countries, an evaluation form was distributed by the Spanish coordinator and filled in by all the participants of the meeting.
