Activity 3. Km0 card game

Date: January 2016

Objectives

To get students more acquainted with season’s vegetables and fruit and km0.

Other objectives:

improve English vocabulary: fruit, vegetables, seasons, numbers etc.

improve English speaking skills by playing different games.

improve social skills by discussing and agreeing upon a suitable game to play.

Working procedure

In Greece a list of 40 vegetables and fruits was agreed upon, 20 common for all partners, and 5 typical of the region of one particular partner.

Every partner was responsible for 10 of them. They had to take a suitable picture of 5 common vegetables and fruits and 5 typical of the region. Apart from that they had to look for the amount of kcal every fruit or vegetable has per 100 g.

Tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes

Potatoes

Lettuce

Then students from each partner school had to do a survey for all 40 vegetables and fruit. First they had to write down the fruit or vegetable in their own language. Second, they had to find out in which seasons this vegetable or fruit is harvested in their region. Therefore they had to use the season’s calendar of their region.

Further they had to find out what the km0 index for this fruit or vegetable in their region is.

Km0 index:     4: the product can be found within 0-24 km

3: the product can be found within 25-50 km

2: the product can be found within 51-100 km

1: the product can be found > 100 km

Last a list to calculate the popularity of each vegetable or fruit was distributed to each partner school. 4 being most popular, 1 least popular.

For example, as proved by the gathered information, tomatoes:

Country N seasons Km 0 Popularity Language Seasons Other INFO Sample
Germany 2 4 3 Tomate summer, fall 19 kcal / 100g km0
Belgium 2 4 3 Tomaat summer, autumn
Greece 3 4 3 Domata Spring, Summer, Autumn
Spain 3 4 2 Tomate
