  2nd Short-Term Exchange

General Lyceum of Vrachneika - Patra

Date: 10th – 16th  April 2016

The second short-term exchange meeting was hosted by the Greek school. The topic of the meeting was water. The meeting was organized by the General Lyceum of Vrachneika and the Greek Erasmus+ team. 42 students and 11 teachers took part in this meeting. Each country took part with six students. The students were hosted by Greek families.

 On Sunday, 10th April, a group of Greek students and teachers travelled from Patras to Athens in order to welcome the foreign delegations arriving at Athens airport. At noon, all the Erasmus+ teams had a guided tour of the Acropolis and the Acropolis museum. The teams arrived at Vrachneika in the evening. The students settled in the hosting families and the teachers in the hotel.
On Monday morning, all the participants met at the General Lyceum of Vrachneika and were welcome by the principal of the school and the Greek coordinator. The participants had the opportunity to watch a video showing the preparations made by the Greek Erasmus+ team before the meeting. They also watched a video of the sights of Patras. Afterwards, the students took part in icebreaking IMG 1070activities. After the icebreaking activities were over, the two teams engaged in the first activity of the project, the debate on the privatization of the water and took their time in order to get prepared. At the same time, the rest of the students watched videos about food and water created by all the Erasmus+ teams. Two hours later, the debate activity was successfully completed. 
The second and the third activity concerned cooperative teaching methods outside classroom. More specifically, the second activity was carried out on Tuesday. Its topic was the use of water and the sustainable water management. The students and their teachers visited the hydroelectric power station of Glafkos, the traditional watermill at Perivola and “The House of Water”. The students made a field study and filled in the worksheets that they had been given. At noon they visited the old town of Patras, the Roman Odeum and the Castle of Patras.
The third activity took place on Wednesday. The Erasmus+ teams visited Mesolongi in order to work on an environmental programme. The topic of the programme was the Mesolongi lagoon and Desalination. All the activities were organized in cooperation with the Environmental Education Centre of Mesolongi. In the beginning, a theoretical presentation of the programme was made and then the students made a field study. gr DSC 0248After the end of the activities, the participants visited the historic and picturesque coastal town of Nafpactos. They returned to Patras by ferry. 
On Thursday the Erasmus+ students and the teachers visited the ancient Olympia, the birth place of the Olympic Games. A guided tour of the archaeological museum and the archaeological site was organized by the Greek team. The students raced against each other inside the ancient stadium. They also had the chance to watch the rehearsal of the ceremonial lighting of the Olympic torch. In the afternoon all the students and the teachers had the opportunity to walk along the beautiful beach of Kourouta.
On Friday a number of activities were carried out in our school.
First of all, a team of 5 students from all participating countries created a radio program inspired by the meeting. This was the fourth activity of the project and should be considered as a dissemination activity, too. The radio program was broadcast by the European School Radio (ESR) on Monday, 23rd May 2016 at 18:00 (Greek time).
IMG 1472As far as the fifth activity is concerned, a mixed-nationality team of students made an experiment in the chemistry lab with younger students from the primary and junior school of Vrachneika (CLIL activity). The experiment was about the amount of water we need to clean our hands. The results were processed by the Spanish team and were uploaded on the Erasmus+ website.
Three more CLIL lesson plans as parts of the sixth activity were created for this meeting. The Belgian team created a CLIL lesson under the title: “Saving water in the kitchen and in the bathroom”. The German team created a CLIL Lesson named: “Playing a domino - repeat and intensify facts and vocabulary about water as a resource”. During this meeting, the Belgian and German teams explained the CLIL lessons to other Erasmus+ students. All the students together made the necessary changes and finally went to the junior high school of Vrachneika and taught them to the 2nd class. The third CLIL lesson was a questionnaire about water habits. It was made with the cooperation of the Spanish and the Greek team. P1000422Pupils from the primary school were invited to answer this questionnaire online in the computer lab. This questionnaire is going to be given to younger pupils during the next two meetings in Germany and Spain. At the end of our Erasmus+ project, the final results will be published on the webpage.
Finally, the Greek team created a questionnaire using the online platform “Kahoot” so that the students could sum up what they had learned during this meeting. The Kahoot game was played by the participating students in the computer lab.
When all the activities were over, the teachers had a thorough meeting. During this meeting there was evaluation of the activities undertaken so far and we further agreed on the ones to be done at the next meeting.
In the evening, a farewell event open to the local community was organized as part of the dissemination of the Erasmus + project.
According to all participants, teachers, students and parents, it was a well-organized meeting with all its aims and objectives being met to the fullest.
The families provided the warmest hospitality and the conduct and the cooperation of the students proved exemplary.
Overall, as the evaluation form, which was distributed and filled in at the end of the activities, showed it was a meeting to be remembered!
